Organize your book with the binder

Parts, chapters and scenes in the binder — add, reorder, label and trash them with mouse or keyboard.

Updated Oct 11, 2026

The binder on the side of the workspace holds your whole project in three sections:

  • Manuscript — the book itself: parts, chapters and scenes.
  • Research — reference material that is never exported with your book.
  • Notes — free-form notes and plans.

Adding items

Use the + menu or right-click an item and choose Add inside (e.g. a scene inside a chapter) or Add below. New items get names like Chapter 3 or Scene 2 that you can rename right away.

Moving things around

Drag and drop items to reorder them or move a scene to another chapter. The Outline and Corkboard views show the same structure, so changes made there appear in the binder too.

Right-click menu

Rename, duplicate, Convert to another type, set a label, status or color, choose whether the item is included in compile, or take a snapshot before a big revision.

Keyboard

With the binder focused:

  • ↑ / ↓ move between items, Enter opens one
  • F2 renames
  • Alt + ↑ / ↓ moves the item up or down
  • Delete moves it to the Trash

Show or hide the binder with Ctrl+Shift+B (⌘⇧B on Mac). Type in Filter binder… to find an item quickly.

Trash

Deleted items go to the Trash, where you can restore them. Only Empty Trash or Delete forever removes them permanently.
