How saving and offline writing work

Inktoria saves as you type, keeps working offline and never silently overwrites a newer version.

Updated Oct 11, 2026

You never need to press Save. Here is what happens behind the scenes.

Saving as you type

  1. Every change is first stored on your device within a fraction of a second.
  2. It is then sent to the server after a short pause in typing — and immediately when you switch documents, hide the tab or close the page.

The indicator in the toolbar shows where things stand: Saved, Saving…, Unsaved changes, Syncing… or Offline — saved on this device. Ctrl+S (⌘S) saves right away if you want peace of mind.

Writing offline

If your connection drops, keep writing. Documents you've already opened on this device stay editable, and your changes wait safely on the device. When you're back online they sync automatically in the background.

  • A document you have never opened on this device isn't available offline yet.
  • Don't clear your browser data while you're offline or while the indicator shows changes waiting to sync.

"This scene was changed elsewhere"

If the same document was saved from another tab or device while you were editing, Inktoria asks which version to keep: Keep my version or Use the other version. The version you don't choose is saved in History, so nothing is lost.

Still seeing "Couldn't save — retrying"?

Inktoria keeps retrying on its own. If it persists, check your connection, then reload the page — your unsynced changes are kept on the device. If the problem continues, contact support and tell us what the indicator says.
